Transcarpathians should prepare for long-term blackouts: is there a possibility of repeated blackouts?

25.03.2024 20:16 Society Голос Карпат

In Ukraine, blackouts are expected in almost all regions.

In Ukraine, blackouts are expected in almost all regions.

The probability of a complete blackout against the backdrop of Russian shelling in Ukraine remains extremely low. Instead, it is possible to return the schedules of power outages this week, that is, until March 31. And not only in the regions affected by shelling, but throughout the country.

We are talking about stabilization shutdowns according to schedules, as was the case last winter. Emergency shutdowns are already applied due to the immediate consequences of shelling. This forecast was voiced to "Focus" by the director of energy programs of the Razumkov Center Volodymyr Omelchenko and the energy expert of the Ukrainian Institute for the Future Andrian Prokip, the publication "Focus" informs.

According to Omelchenko, the risks of planned outages this week are very high throughout the country, in particular in Kyiv. The point is that if the enemy continues to attack the energy infrastructure in the future, it will be necessary to return stabilization schedules for electricity supply in the regions.

According to Prokip, emergency shutdowns will also continue. "There are no risks of a total blackout, but the probability of emergency shutdowns in the regions is more than 50%. The weather is still cold, cloudy, there is little solar generation, imports remain at a high level," the expert said.

He believes that in the current situation, we can talk about potential outages for about two hours a day. The expert advises consumers to follow the recommendations given in 2022. First of all:

save electricity, do not turn on unnecessary appliances;

If possible, transfer the use of electrical appliances from peak hours to night.

Should we prepare for problems with the supply of electricity to the residents of Transcarpathia?

Despite the fact  that Ukraine has an acute issue of further electricity supply in the regions and will have to return to long-term blackouts in many regions, there is currently no shortage of electricity in Zakarpattia. This was reported by the Zakarpattia Regional Military Administration.

As you know, there are currently no problems with the supply of electricity to the settlements of the districts.

The day before, the head of the Zakarpattia Regional Military Administration held a meeting with power engineers and representatives of emergency services.

"Despite the enemy's attacks on energy generation facilities in different regions of the country, in Zakarpattia, the supply of electricity to people's homes and enterprises remains stable.
Shutdowns are not expected," Mykyta said.

It should be noted that last year the region suffered a total blackout along with the entire state. In different districts of the region, there were long-term and daily power outages. The problem was raised on Facebook, where they appealed to the authorities and representatives of Oblenergo.

From voltage drops, after the restoration of power supply to the homes of residents, consumer electronics began to fail .

In 2023, the region once again began to prepare for the next possible blackouts. But there were no numerous outages.

This year, starting from January and until now, temporary blackouts are periodically introduced in the region and they are directly related to repair work on power grids in settlements. Electricity is turned off in the homes of residents, in particular, from nine in the morning to 17:00 Kyiv time. Sometimes they turn it off for 10 hours according to the plan.

This time , power outages will be applied in the region from March 25 to 29.

Also today and yesterday, emergency blackouts were introduced in the region .

Last time, in order to survive the blackout, Transcarpathians stocked up on candles, power banks, and generators. The latter have risen in price at a record high since last year, which will hit wallets.

To recap: what should be stocked  up for the period of probable long-term power outages?
