However, while locals worry about the possibility of death, Jessada Denduangboripanth, a professor of biology at Chulalongkorn University, says their appearance near the surface of the water is likely due to illness or a change in current.
He said: "The discovery of this paddlefish does not imply an earthquake or tsunami, it is only a belief. In fact, they mostly appear because they are sick or close to death."
