Almost 190,000 candidates are competing for positions in local self-government bodies. Poles elect deputies to the councils of communes, counties, cities, voivodeship councils, as well as vojts, burgomasters (heads of counties) and mayors.
If candidates do not receive at least 50% of the votes in the first round, the second round will take place two weeks later, on April 21.
These local elections are the first electoral test for the coalition government led by Prime Minister Donald Tusk, almost four months after coming to power.
Opinion polls released a few days before the vote show that the parties in the ruling coalition led by Tusk and the opposition right-wing group Law and Justice led by Jaroslaw Kaczynski go hand in hand.
