A unique object from the past can still be seen and ridden in Uzhhorod. Despite such a significantly long period of time from then to the present day, the "time machine", as eyewitnesses call that rare elevator, is still working. It is located in the Zakarpattia Regional Administration. Video of the operating elevator, which today few Transcarpathians know about, can be viewed at the active link: https://www.facebook.com/share/JTWKC46H9Hv5rzgj/.

The post to the video says that such an elevator was built in the regional center back in 1936 during the rule of the Czechoslovak government in the region. Currently, there are not many such rare elevators in the world — in Uzhhorod and Prague. The comments also note that a similar find is still  preserved in the Czech city of Brno, where many tourists, including Transcarpathians, often travel. Tourists are also attracted by the ancient Transcarpathian Uzhhorod with its culture, history, architectural highlights, because there are many interesting objects in the city.

At one time, the historic paternoster elevator was one of those places where children of that time were often drawn. There was a great atmosphere in the middle of the elevator, as eyewitnesses recall in the comments. There were also cases when children deliberately made their way into the building just to ride it and feel as if they were in another dimension of time.

For reference: A paternoster is a passenger elevator consisting of open cabins without doors, continuously moving in a circle so that some cabins go up in the shaft, and others down.

The name "paternoster" comes from the Latin phrase pater noster, which translates as the Lord's Prayer, since the system is similar in principle to the fingering of the rosary by monks when they read prayers.

History

The first patented cyclic elevator was built by the English company J&E Hall in 1884, using Peter Hart's patent. Before that, in 1868, a paternoster was built in Liverpool, but the invention was not officially patented. In the first half of the 20th century. Paternosters were installed in Europe. Currently, it is forbidden to install them in houses due to the high risk of injury to passengers. However, some of them continue to function. The working paternoster is open to visitors in Berlin, Franz-Mehring-Platz 1. In total, there are 231 active paternosters left in Germany.

Active pasternosters in Ukraine

It is known for certain about one active paternoster. It is located in the building of the Transcarpathian Regional State Administration in Uzhgorod, on Narodna Square. The building, erected as the Building of the Zemstvo Government of Subcarpathian Ruthenia, was erected by the Czech architect František Krupka in 1936, and was equipped with two continuous passenger elevators (paternosters), one of which is still in operation, however, only from time to time - launched mainly for preventive purposes.
