The Polish government has announced a number of changes for refugees from Ukraine aimed at simplifying the system for obtaining temporary residence permits.

The Polish government has announced a number of changes for refugees from Ukraine aimed at simplifying the system for obtaining temporary residence permits.

This was announced by the Minister of Internal Affairs and Administration of Poland Maciej Duszczyk.

"We have prepared a system that will allow all persons with PESEL UKR to obtain a temporary residence permit. Whether they are working or not working, whether they are retired or students, a child under 6 years old or over 6 years old. It will be an automatic system that, with the help of one provision, will change the status of temporary protection to the status of temporary residence," the official said.

A separate system for obtaining temporary residence permits for Ukrainians will be created, which will not be issued by voivodeship offices, but by separate bodies, which should facilitate the rapid issuance of permits.

From July 1, 2024 to September 30, 2025, such persons will have to register on the newly created electronic portal and visit the city administration to draw up the necessary documents there. The first temporary residence permits will be issued from 2025 and will be valid for 3 years.

"A person's status will legally change only when they personally come and pick up a temporary residence permit. Until then, it will be under temporary protection," Dushchyk stressed.

Temporary protection for Ukrainians in Poland will continue as long as it is possible on the basis of EU regulations.
