"Is it the end of the world today?": A mysterious ring from space fell to Earth and scared people (PHOTOS).

The villagers were shocked to see a 500-kilogram ring made of partially burnt metal that fell from the sky in Kenya.

The space debris, about two meters in diameter, fell with a loud explosion in Mukuku, Makueni County, between the capital Nairobi and the coastal city of Mombasa.

No buildings were damaged, and no one was injured, but it frightened the villagers who saw or heard the fall on December 30.

One woman told the Tuko news site:

"I was going about my business when we heard a loud explosion that we couldn’t decipher. Then the metallic object fell and made another noise, scaring us."

Another resident said: "I heard what I thought was an explosion when it landed here! Boom! Boom! Boom! I asked: 'Is it the end of the world today?'. I was shocked because it was so sunny, with no hint of rain. I hope our leaders will tell us what this object was and why it fell here."

Its origin has yet to be determined, but the Kenyan Space Agency believes it is a separation ring from a rocket booster.

In a statement, it said: "Such objects are usually designed to burn up upon reentry into Earth's atmosphere or fall over uninhabited areas, such as oceans."

The agency stated that this is "an isolated incident," but the increase in space travel has led to more space debris falling to Earth. This has raised growing concerns about public safety.
